Interviewer: What might help someone that is reading this is to explain what components are there to a good traffic ticket attorney?
Mark: Well, first of all, you should have a thorough knowledge of whom you are intending to hire. There are a lot of courts and a lot of different jurisdictions that do the same things completely different. You need a thorough and specialized knowledge of the law from a traffic ticket attorney.
Most lawyers don’t take the time to understand traffic court. They figure that traffic tickets are “small potatoes” and so they don’t understand the ins and outs, and complexities of traffic issues.
Know the Court Personnel
There are some judges who almost always rule in favor of the police. It can be really hard to get a fair hearing in front of them. If that’s the case, you need an attorney who keeps close track of that, understands those judges and what to do to avoid them.
At the same time, there are also judges and also police officers who might not be up on some of their certificates or not very good with paperwork. A good attorney will know there’s a pretty good chance that they aren’t going to be current.
Know the Local Police
On the other hand, you know officers who are rock solid. You know that they’re going to come in and have documentation for every detail. These officers are going to clearly remember the incident and they’re not going to try to overstate things and get themselves in trouble. That’s when a competent attorney will know it’s time to cut a deal.
So those areas are where traffic attorneys who are experienced stand out. It’s evident that they have that basic knowledge of the law and they understand the individual officers and judges that they’re dealing with.
