The Point System in California

Interviewer: That’s quite a dollar amount. You mention points on your license, so how does that point system work in California? How many points until you lose your license, how many points is a normal ticket worth?

Mark: In California, a normal speeding ticket or going through a red light, is worth one point. Basically, if you get four points within a 12-month period, you’ll get a suspension. If you get six points within a two-year period, you get a suspension. If you get eight points within a three-year period, you get a suspension. I don’t really think they go further than that.

Two-Point Violations

Now, there are also two-point violations, too. For instance, it would apply to driving over a hundred miles an hour. Believe it or not, there are quite a lot of tickets for that around here based on the landscape being a wide-open desert area. That is a two-point violation.
